The solid waste generated from ships daily contributes to the issue of marine litter, and is also a source of microplastics. In efforts to reduce the amount of waste being illegally discharged at sea, ports are more frequently applying schemes with financial incentives to encourage ships to deliver the waste generated onboard to a reception facility.
The Guidance Document Regarding the use of Cost Recovery Systems for the Delivery of Waste from Ships provides:
- An overview of the relevant legal frameworks linked to the use of cost recovery systems;
- an outline of the key elements of cost recovery systems; and
- recommendations for good practices in different types of ports and for different types of waste, including waste fishing gear.
This guidance is the 9th knowledge document published under the GloLitter Partnerships Project, accessible through the Knowledge Library. The GloLitter Partnerships Project is a global project under the the OceanLitter Programme at IMO, with projects jointly implemented by IMO and FAO, targeting the issue of marine plastic litter from the shipping and fisheries industries.
