Oceanlitter Programme Global Industry Alliance (GIA)
The OceanLitter Programme is home to the OceanLitter Global Industry Alliance (GIA) to support the prevention and reduction of Sea-Based Marine Plastic Litter.
The GIA will be a public-private partnership, bringing together maritime and fisheries industry leaders as well as industries from waste management sectors. Its primary objective is to engage the private sector in sharing expertise and finding innovative solutions to reduce and prevent sea-based sources of marine plastic litter. It will also address common barriers to the uptake and implementation of technologies, alternative approaches and operational measures, with a view to protect oceans and promote sustainable fisheries.
GIA workstreams and activities
The GIA members will decide together on activities to be implemented, based on the workstreams of Shipping and Fisheries.
Potential examples include:
- Industry roundtables.
- Development of guidance and tools to support industry actions to reduce, reuse, recycle and prevent plastic litter entering the marine environment.
- Raising awareness of potential solutions to tackle marina plastic waste.
Participation
The OceanLitter GIA will include companies such as seafood producers, shipowners, fishing gear manufacturers, technology and data providers, ports, and waste management firms, recycling companies and class societies and other industries dealing with marine plastic waste.
The GIA is currently calling for submissions of interest from companies to join the efforts to protect oceans from plastic litter.
